A mothers evolution in embracing Autism

I vividly remember capturing this moment and editing out the clothes hanger Brantley held so tightly. I couldn’t grasp the thought of that coat hanger holding a place in my beautiful boy’s Christmas photo. It seemed senseless and I couldn’t understand why he couldn’t pose without it. After all, it was such a great picture… without that hanger.

It’s been seven years since I cropped that photo and I now regret that decision; that hanger represents more than autism—it symbolizes Brantley and the support he needed for that seemingly unnecessary picture. While he may not carry hangers anymore, there's always something in his hands or mouth for self-stimulatory behavior. These items are essential in Brantley's life and bring calm to his storm, and I cherish them for that.

I've reached a point where I embrace featuring his "items" without hiding his true self, even in pictures destined for Christmas cards, frames or walls. That clothes hanger was supporting his calm presence, it stands as a testament to his unique journey. Looking at this picture now, and reflecting back on my foolish cropping I realize it also signifies my growth in accepting and appreciating who Brantley is and what he needs.
