A Movie Night Twist

“Can we watch a movie, the marrying kind of movie?” my youngest son asked. He knew chick flicks were my favorite and he wanted to butter me up to allow him to stay up late.

Cuddled on the couch with a massive fuzzy blanket, we settled on Benji to appease everyone. We thought Brantley would be bouncing off the walls and not giving a hoot about the movie, after all, we’ve replayed this scene a million times in the last 8 years.

One thing I should know by now is that Brantley is always full of surprises, they are usually the "oh no, he ate this" variety. However, tonight brought a different kind of surprise – the heartwarming, snuggly, family-time kind.

My wild child unexpectedly cozied up on the other side of my lap, watching the movie with a keen interest only taking occasional breaks for movement. The pinnacle of my pride occurred when Brantley noticed that his brother was saddened by a scene and he leaned in to offer him comforting support.

In that moment on the couch, surrounded by a massive fuzzy blanket, me and my two boys shared an unexpected togetherness. A togetherness, that is often difficult when you have a child, like Brantley, one who is withdrawn and gives his hugs on a run. It turned out to be a plot twist I wasn’t expecting and one I will always cherish.
