Finding Love and Balance In Unexpected Adventure

This past weekend, I took my younger son to an Ohio State football game. A time meant not only to bond over a love of the buckeyes but also a chance to show him that while so much of our daily lives revolve around Brantley’s needs, that he matters to.

I called home to check in on Brantley — long past his bedtime — surprised to hear him squealing with delight in the background.

My heart skipped a beat. It was late, and the thought of him still being awake made me panic as I pondered if his sleep issues had returned.

But my worries melted away as soon as I heard my husband’s voice. The pure joy in it was unmistakable as he started telling me about their evening. He had friends over, and they spent the night riding four-wheelers—Brantley right there with them, loving every minute of it.

When I got home just after 11 p.m., I was greeted by the sound of giggles that come from deep in Brantley’s belly. He was still wide awake, his face glowing with happiness.

As I watched him, I couldn’t help but think—these are the nights he'll look back on when he’s older. Nights where his autism didn't set him apart. A night when he was just one of the boys, having the time of his life.

What started as a game meant to show Bronson that he’s seen and valued turned out to be something more. It became a night for both Brantley and Bronson to feel cherished—each in their own way, each reminded that they are loved beyond measure. #autismfamily #autismlife #autismparents #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsparent
