Gratitude Beyond Social Media Posts, Embracing the Impact of a Wheelchair on Brantley's Well-Being

November prompts a wave of Facebook posts expressing gratitude. Although I've never participated, I regularly reflect on things I'm thankful for. While recently observing Brantley engrossed in a movie, the realization of my gratitude for his wheelchair struck me.

His wheelchair eases his participation in public activities that would otherwise pose challenges. It allows him to interact with peers in church, as they all gather around to determine who can help push him each Sunday. It allows him to cheer on his brother in sporting events, join schoolmates for movies, and partake in experiences like Columbus Blue Jackets games. Yet, surpassing these social advantages, the wheelchair has a profound impact on Brantley's well-being.

Brantley's typical demeanor resembles the Energizer Bunny hooked up to a 12-volt battery—constantly in motion and exceptionally fast. Sitting still is a challenge, often requiring edible incentives to sustain focus for more than one minute. However, his wheelchair acts as a calming influence on his naturally restless body. It offers him a welcomed sense of tranquility amid his usual high energy levels.

The same child who struggles to sit still for one minute at a time, can sit for an impressive 1 hour and 42 minute movie while strapped in his chair. He will intently and calmly watch the entire movie with his blue eyes absorbed in the screen—an accomplishment that highlights his chair as a sanctuary.

I may never understand how the wheelchair works its magic, but it provides Brantley solace and tranquility amidst the surrounding chaos, and for that, I am eternally thankful.
