Hugs, Snot, and a Grin

Brantley's hugs are top-notch, surprising, and super snug. However, for the past 6 months, they've come with an extra side of snot that he cheekily wipes on you while sporting a mischievous grin. Despite upping his Zyrtec and throwing in some fancy eye drops, his allergy symptoms stuck around and became more severe, frequently causing his pensive blue eyes to swell shut.

We initially blamed these reactions on his environmental allergies, thinking that was the lone culprit. Then, it hit us: many times, these symptoms followed his meals. Could my snot faced little boy, have food allergies?

His allergist dismissed the notion that his symptoms could be food-related, but I stood my ground. One incident is chance, twice is coincidence, and three times? That's a pattern. My always-hungry kid had a talent for reacting, especially to foods like eggs and shrimp. Despite the doctor's insistence that eye swelling wasn't a food allergy symptom, we tested him, and sure enough, he reacted. My boy has food allergies and we now have epi-pens.

Navigating the balance between trusting a doctor's advice and following your parental instincts isn't a stroll in the park, but it's the journey we embrace as parents—a path we won't abandon. While doctors understand the medical side of things, you're the true expert when it comes to your child.
