Living with Fear: The Echo of our Door Alarm in a Home Touched by Elopement

Our door alarm has an uncanny ability to make my heart plummet unexpectedly. I guess you could call it a side effect of having a child with limited communication and cognitive abilities that elopes.

The unmistakable signal of elopement rings through our home with a chime when a door is opened. Given Brantley's history of elopement, each unexpected chime brings my heart to a halt.

Twice last night, Brantley absentmindedly opened the lone door lacking a double-sided keypad doorknob and ran outside. His actions showcased his increasing boldness which add another layer of terror for me.

We swiftly installed a keypad doorknob, which requires a code to be input for access the the door.  Despite our efforts – with a Project Lifesaver device, constant supervision, and double-sided keypad door locks on all exits – we can't help but wonder: Is it enough? My fear lingers.
