Envision being trapped in a situation where you could hear and understand everything being said around you, but you could not respond. It would be a horrific feeling, especially when those around you think you don’t understand.
That is Brantley’s life.
A big misconception is that nonverbal means non intelligent. But Brantley debunks that theory. He is proof that there is no connection between the two.
His reactions reflect his understanding of conversations around him. The giggles that erupt when I ask him something silly are the sweetest sound to my ears. The sillier the question, the deeper the belly giggle. Any conversation regarding Joel and I going away for a few days bring tears and rage. They come like clockwork and are enough to break my heart and make me want to forgo the much needed respite trips.
These are just a few of the ways that Brantley let’s me know he understands. If it weren’t for him, I am not sure that I would make a correlation between someone’s verbal status and their intelligence. And while I am not sure what goes on behind those pensive blue eyes, I am 100% certain that he is listening and he understands. He is all the proof I need that nonverbal does not mean non-intelligent.
