Setback in Toilet Training: Flu Strikes, But Brantley's Triumph Delayed, Not Derailed

Monday morning, I helped my 8-year-old step into underwear, a significant departure from the uncomfortable diapers he's worn his entire life.

He immediately dashed around the house, erupting into uncontrollable laughter.

But when I changed him back into a diaper for his 30-mile commute to school, his glares made it clear he was furious with me.

Despite his frustration with his commute diapers, Brantley nailed day 1 of toilet training, with more successes than accidents, before crashing on the couch at 7:30 pm.

In hindsight, that should have been our first hint that something was off, Brantley never falls asleep on the couch.

The next morning, it was clear the Flu-A we saw symptoms of over the weekend returned with a vengeance. Our lively boy was back to being pale and lethargic after only 36 hours reprieve of symptoms.

Faced with the dilemma of what to do with our potty party plans, we were forced to reconsider Brantley’s toilet training. Despite a promising start, Brantley's sudden lethargy prevented him from sitting on the toilet, and the last thing we wanted was to make the toilet aversive to him.

Despite our reluctance, we opted to delay his training until next week, with the hope that it would provide him the necessary time to fully recover.

While it may appear that the flu has taken the upper hand, I remain confident that Brantley will come out diaper free and on top; it’s just a temporary setback.
