Superstar Student

As I sifted through Brantley’s bookbag as part of my daily routine, I stumbled upon a handful of folded papers. With a mix of curiosity and anticipation, I hastily unfolded them to discover what treasures awaited within.

And then, it happened.

Tears blurred my vision.

"Superstar Student."

Brantley had been crowned the Superstar Student of his class for the month.

Five notes, described the incredible progress they had witnessed in my spirited boy. Each note from a different teacher at his school, which is designed exclusively for children with autism.

While I would occasionally see announcements about the Superstar Student, I never allowed myself to entertain the possibility that Brantley would ever be acknowledged in such a way. Because, even among his classmates, Brantley stands out for his behaviors, which require a 1-1 aide despite the schools downright amazing ratios.

But, this year school has been nothing short of extraordinary. Brantley has blossomed in ways I couldn’t have imagined at this time last year.

And it isn’t just me who has noticed.

My darling boy is finding his stride. He is undergoing a profound transformation, marked by growth and improvement, a testament to his resilience and the unwavering love and dedication of his amazing teachers, therapists and aides.

As I gazed at those papers through tear-filled eyes, my heart swelled with pride as I reflected on the beauty of progress and the potential that lies within each and every one of us.
