The Magic of True Inclusion: A Birthday Party, A Team, and a Fist Bump

When one of Bronson’s friends invited Brantley to his birthday party, it was more than just a kind gesture—it was a true act of inclusion. We often hear about inclusion in conversations, but experiencing it firsthand is a different kind of magic altogether.

As we pulled up, I found myself both hopeful and anxious. I’m used to the unknown, but there’s always that small whisper of worry in the back of my mind about how the other kids will treat Brantley.

Then came the moment that lifted my heart in a way I can’t quite explain. The birthday boy—overflowing with joy and energy—ran into the dodgeball court, scanned the kids, spotted Brantley happily jumping, completely unaware of the game, and shouted, “I’m on Brantley’s team!”

In that instant, everything paused for me. My heart sang.

Later, as everyone gathered for cake, I noticed another boy smiling at Brantley. As he got up and walked toward us, I wondered if he might remember Brantley from kindergarten, when he attended our local public school. But he didn’t—he simply came over to offer a fist bump.

And there it was—my heart singing all over again.

As I watched these interactions, it dawned on me: inclusion isn’t just about making space—it’s about truly seeing someone, for exactly who they are, and celebrating that. Today was a reminder that, sometimes, the smallest acts—like choosing to be on someone’s team or offering a fist bump—are the ones that change everything, they are the truest forms of inclusion.

Today wasn’t a day filled with big milestones or grand achievements. It was simply a day where Brantley got to be Brantley, in a space where he was welcomed and loved, just as he is. And that made it perfect. #autismfamily #autismlife #specialneedsfamily #specialneedsmom #inclusion
