Transforming Brantley’s Sleep and Future with Hope

“Brantley on a full night of sleep is sooo good!"

Ten words, sent by Brantley’s teacher, that  sum up our recent days perfectly. 10 words that all began with one intervention—a safety bed-we have dubbed “Brantman’s House”.

Before Brantley got his bed, I talked a big game to him on how cool it would be to have his own little house. I even joked that he was doing so much better than mommy and daddy, because neither of us  had our own houses at 8 years old. But deep down, I worried. I worried that he might get upset when we put him to bed without room for his nightly antics of jumping, pica and self injurious behaviors. I worried about what kind of rage would ensue.

However, Brantley surprised me. The moment bedtime is mentioned, he joyfully climbs up to Brantman’s House without hesitation. His love for his little house bed shows that it is more than just a bed; it's his cherished retreat. It’s a place of protection, one that protects him from his own behaviors and one that he protects from everyone, even his brother who so desperately wants to have a party with him in there.

Yet, Brantman's House offers more than safety; it is a place to sleep, a serene haven where Brantley can unwind and drift off free of the dangers of his own behaviors for the first time in years. And to my surprise, my wild little boy, who has struggled with sleep for 6 years is finally sleeping.

Thinking about Brantley's journey fills me with immense gratitude and hope. Gratitude for that little house and hope for Brantley’s future and the strides he will make after each nights sleep. Because, the amazing power of a good night's sleep can make a big difference in one’s lives.
