When Routine is Swept Away: Hurricanes and Autism

I can’t stop thinking about the families in Florida, especially those raising children with autism, as they face the challenges of this hurricane.

Living in Ohio, I can’t begin to fully grasp the weight they must be carrying right now.

The unpredictability of a hurricane is terrifying for any family, but for kids who rely on routine and stability, it must feel like the raging winds and rain are beating directly on them.

I can only imagine that children on the Autism spectrum, are not just battling the physical storm—but the storm within, as their sense of safety and routine is thrown into chaos. The sudden changes, the loud and frightening noises, the power outages—it’s overwhelming to neurotypical individuals, let alone those dealing with Autism.

Of course there is the option of evacuation — leaving behind everything familiar, with children who may not fully understand — which is also a lot to bear.

The tears, confusion, and meltdowns some families are navigating right now as safe spaces are disrupted is truly heartbreaking.

To the parents and caregivers battling this storm, you are doing everything you can in an impossible situation. Your strength and resilience are unmatched, and your love is the anchor your child needs in this storm, even when it feels like nothing is enough.

Though I can’t fully grasp what you're going through, I want you to know you're seen and not alone. As you face the unpredictable winds and rain, hold onto hope.

Here is to praying that all families affected by Hurricane Helene, stay safe, take care of themselves, and know that brighter days will come.
